Session Outline: The DMN and Autistic Inertia
1. "Hyper-connected" (The Eight-Lane Highway)
-
Core Concept: The Default Mode Network (DMN) at rest.
-
Neurotypical Brain: Wanders pleasantly (past, future, social). Analogy: Two-lane country roads.
-
Autistic Brain: Specific hubs (special interests, patterns) are hyper-connected. Analogy: An eight-lane superhighway.
2. The "Sticky" DMN (The Gravity Well)
-
Core Concept: Neurological "gravity" and looping.
-
The Pull: The brain's attention naturally gravitates to the massive, fast "eight-lane highway" during rest.
-
The Stickiness: Once there, the brain finds intense coherence or joy (or anxiety). It loops efficiently, lacking a natural reason to exit.
3. "Switching" as a Monumental Task (Autistic Inertia)
-
Core Concept: The metabolic cost of transitioning.
-
Neurotypical Transition: Easily diverts from the "country road" to the Task Positive Network (TPN) when an external demand occurs.
-
Autistic Transition (Inertia): Requires immense metabolic energy to brake on a high-momentum loop, dismantle the connection, and reboot the external attention network.
4. Perseveration
-
Core Concept: The behavioral outcome of the sticky DMN.
-
Traditional View: Wrongly seen as a behavioral flaw or "stubbornness."
-
Mechanical Reality: The brain is neurologically locked into a hyper-connected circuit and lacks the immediate metabolic torque to "pull the switch."
